About the “16th Survey on Consumer Attitudes Toward Medicines and the Pharmaceutical Industry”

We are pleased to announce that the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (hereinafter referred to as “JPMA”) has published the report on the results of the “16th Survey on Public Perceptions of Medicines and the Pharmaceutical Industry,” conducted this fiscal year, on the JPMA website.

The 16th Survey on Public Awareness of Medicines and the Pharmaceutical Industry

According to the results of this survey, the level of trust in the pharmaceutical industry stood at 88%, indicating that it remains at a high level, consistent with previous findings. Furthermore, regarding the image of the pharmaceutical industry, positive responses such as “an industry of high social necessity” and “an industry with high technological capabilities” ranked at the top.Furthermore, regarding new drug development, a high percentage of respondents expressed opinions such as “new drug development is necessary” and “it is socially meaningful,” suggesting that the pharmaceutical industry and its activities are highly regarded and held in high esteem by the general public and patients.

Additionally, a new question this year asked about “changes in attitudes toward health, medicine, and healthcare before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.” The percentage of respondents who answered “changed” or “changed somewhat” was 39%, and of those, 67% reported that their “health awareness has increased.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact social life worldwide, the mission of the pharmaceutical industry is being recognized more than ever before. To meet the expectations of our stakeholders and continue to earn their strong trust even amid changing social conditions, we will make the fullest use of these survey results and strive to advance the activities of the JPMA.
