The Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) has released on its website the analysis of the results of the "15th Survey on Consumer Awareness of Drugs and the Pharmaceutical Industry" conducted this year.

The 15th Survey on Sei-katsu-sha Attitudes Toward Drugs and the Pharmaceutical Industry

According to the results of this year's survey, the level of trust in the pharmaceutical industry remained high at 85.7%. The percentage of those who approve of the industry tends to increase as the age group gets older. As in the past, respondents gave high marks to the pharmaceutical industry's social necessity, technological strength and potential, and enthusiasm for research and development of new drugs. On the other hand, in terms of expectations for the pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical companies, expectations for drug discovery, such as "make drugs that work well and fast" and "develop new drugs/further research and development" stand out amidst the Corona disaster.
In addition, a new question asking about sei-katsu-sha awareness of "drug prices" was added this year. As a result, there was a wide variation in opinions on "high/low prices of prescription drugs" among different age groups, including those who were indifferent to the question. Regarding the "method of determining the price of prescription drugs," only 23% of all respondents answered that it is an official price. On the other hand, when asked about their awareness of "news reports of the appearance of high-cost drugs," the most common response (34%) was "Cannot judge based on price alone," but opinions were divided between those who had a positive view and those who had a negative view.

Based on the results of this survey, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Japan (PMAJ) will explore areas for improvement in the association's efforts and activities, and reflect them in the creation of more effective and useful information content and methods of information dissemination.
