Providing Information on the “Summer Vacation Independent Research Website” for Elementary and Middle School Students

The Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (hereinafter referred to as “JPMA”) is pleased to announce that it has published a pharmaceutical industry-related independent research theme titled “A Deep Dive into the Secrets of Medicine” on the“Summer Vacation! Free Project 2020,” a program operated by One Publishing Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yuji Hirose).
The JPMA conducts various activities to foster a broader understanding of the research-and-development-oriented pharmaceutical industry among all stakeholders. Providing information through our collaboration with “Gakken Kids Net” is part of these efforts; this initiative has been ongoing since 2010 with the aim of helping young people, such as elementary and junior high school students, feel more familiar with the pharmaceutical industry and medicines.
This fiscal year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we will focus on themes that provide an explanation of infectious diseases and the mechanisms by which the human body fights illness, and we will disseminate information accordingly.

In addition, the JPMA has launched the “Medicine Research Institute” on its website to provide elementary and junior high school students with information about medicines and the pharmaceutical industry. To encourage visitors to explore this resource as well, we have added a banner link to it on Gakken Kids Net’s “In-Depth Study of the Secrets of Medicine.”
The JPMA will continue to actively provide information about the industry and medicines in order to foster a deeper understanding of the pharmaceutical industry among the general public.

“Gakken Kids Net” (https://kids.gakken.co.jp/) is a website operated by One Publishing Co., Ltd. (a joint venture between Gakken Plus and the Nippon Sohatsu Group) that provides a variety of content with the aim of helping elementary and junior high school students enjoy using the Internet.The site continues to feature a wealth of content aimed not only at elementary and junior high school students, but also at everyone involved with children, including parents and teachers.“A Grand Study of the Secrets of Medicine” is published as part of the “Summer Vacation! Free Project” (https://kids.gakken.co.jp/jiyuu/) on this site, specifically as the “Summer Vacation Support Special” (Available from July 1 to August 31, 2020).
2. JPMA “Medicine Research Institute”
The “Medicine Research Institute” (http://www.jpma.or.jp/junior/kusurilabo) is a fictional facility established on the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) website. At the Medicine Research Institute, visitors can learn accurate information about medicines through five categories.
- “The History of Medicines” … The history of medicines, the evolution of medicines, and biographies of notable figures in the pharmaceutical industry
- “Drug Development” … Steps in new drug development, how tablets are made
- “Types of Medicines” ... Long-acting medicines, forms of medicines, enteric-coated medicines, etc.

- “The Role of Medicines” ... The Body and Medicines, Effects of Medicines, Side Effects of Medicines
This material is intended for upper elementary school students and middle school students. Kanji typically learned in 5th grade and above are provided with furigana, and the content is presented using easy-to-understand language and in an appropriate length.
