Award Comment

Sadao Nagaoka, Director, Pharmaceutical and Industrial Policy Research Institute / Professor, Faculty of Economics, Tokyo Keizai University

I am very grateful for the recognition of my long-term efforts in economic analysis of innovation and the results I have achieved to date. My book, "The Economics of Invention," consists of three parts: creation of inventions, innovation, and the patent system. I believe that the award was granted in recognition of the fact that I conducted empirical research on fundamental issues such as the process of invention, motivation for inventive step, cumulative innovation, and the role of the public domain, using data collected independently.

The results of research on drug discovery conducted at the Institute for Policy Studies (e.g., assessing the social value of drugs and understanding the uncertainties of drug discovery projects) are also reflected in this publication. We would like to express our gratitude for this research opportunity.
