Drug Evaluation Committee What is AI?
May 2019
The results of a 2018 survey of member companies regarding their AI initiatives revealed that, in addition to a shortage of AI talent (including not only engineers who develop AI but also personnel capable of planning and designing projects that utilize AI), there were also quite a few responses indicating that respondents simply did not understand what AI is capable of in the first place.
This book is intended not for engineers who develop AI, but primarily for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry seeking to implement AI in their businesses, as well as users who wish to utilize AI-powered services. It explains and introduces what AI is, what information and environment are required to develop and implement it, and what specific tasks can be accomplished using AI at present or in the near future.Additionally, as an example of AI implementation, we have included details on the development of an AI system that diagnoses pleural effusion from chest X-ray images, along with a program that has been verified to work. We believe this will serve as a useful reference for those interested in AI development who are ready to take on the challenge.
