Drug Evaluation Committee Actual Conditions and Issues of Database Research in Medical Affairs: A Comprehensive Analysis Based on Questionnaire Survey and Paper Survey (FY2025 Survey)

In recent years, the utilization of real world data (RWD) has been promoted as a national strategy in Japan, and the construction of related data infrastructure and systems are underway. While pharmaceutical companies are promoting activities utilizing RWD in various departments/functions including medical affairs (MA), issues such as investment decisions, organization and system development, and securing professional human resources have emerged within pharmaceutical companies that are not fully utilizing RWD.
Based on these results, the JPMA MA Subcommittee TF11 (Research on RWD in MA) conducted a questionnaire survey of 32 companies and a survey of case studies of papers conducted by Japanese pharmaceutical companies, extracted the actual conditions and issues of RWD utilization in MA, discussed solutions, and compiled the results into a comprehensive analysis. Based on these results, the actual conditions and issues of RWD utilization in MA were extracted, solutions to these issues were examined, and the results of a comprehensive analysis were compiled and published on the JPMA website. We hope that this report will help to deepen understanding of the actual status of RWD research in MA and how it should be handled in the future.
