Drug Evaluation Committee Points to keep in mind when conducting indirect comparisons in cost-effectiveness evaluation
Data Science Subcommittee
February 2025
In January 2022, the Data Science Subcommittee's FY2021 Continuing Task Force 3 released a report on population adjustment methods such as Matching Adjusted Indirect Comparison and Simulated Treatment Comparison, "Are Population Adjustment Methods Useful in Indirect Comparisons? Are Population Adjustment Methods Useful in Indirect Comparisons? which explained the theoretical aspects of these methods in detail. The Data Science Subcommittee's 2024 Continuing Task Force 7 has now prepared a new report on population adjustment methods, which have been increasingly applied in medical technology evaluation in recent years, as a successor to this report.
Focusing on practical rather than theoretical aspects, this report discusses in what situations the results of the population adjustment method can be used for decision making through past applications of the method. We hope that this report will be a useful resource for practitioners in Japan who conduct indirect comparisons including the population adjustment method.
