Results of the Questionnaire Survey on Reduction of Environmental Burden by Digitization of Attached Documents
June 17, 2024
The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Japan (PMAJ) Study Group on Environmental Issues conducted a survey on the extent to which the computerization of attached documents has contributed to the reduction of environmental impact in the PMAJ as a whole, following the start of computerization of attached documents as a result of the revision of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law that went into effect on August 1, 2021. Specifically, a questionnaire was sent to all member companies in October 2023, and responses were received from 56 companies. A summary of the response results is provided below.
- The digitization of the attached documents is expected to reduce paper consumption by 560 million sheets or 3,400 tons per year, which will result in a reduction of 6,100 tons of CO2 emissions.
- The CO2 emission reduction is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of 2,200 households, or about 2.5 times the volume of the Tokyo Dome.
These results were obtained while the survey was still in the process of being digitized, and it is believed that further reductions are underway at this time.
The Environmental Issues Study Group plans to continue to actively share information among member companies, promote innovative collaboration with business partners, and support various initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of pharmaceutical association member companies.
