Innovative pharmaceutical industry statement on COP28 Declaration on Climate and Health

Geneva, December 3, 2023 - The innovative pharmaceutical industry commends the COP28 for demonstrating that climate change is an urgent health challenge and for demonstrating its willingness to address climate change, including by adopting the first ever declaration on climate change and health.
Pharmaceutical companies continue to be at the forefront of setting ambitious net zero and carbon neutrality goals, acting as part of a global initiative to reduce carbon emissions throughout their operations and value chains. To achieve these goals, we are investing in research and development with a view to providing more environmentally sustainable products, manufacturing processes, and supply chains.
Pharmaceuticals are complex and highly regulated, requiring a high degree of coordination and collaboration among industry, governments, and health care systems.
Therefore, collaboration across UN agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), governments, civil society, and the private sector will be essential to achieving these aspirations. We welcome the WHO Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate Change and Health (ATACH) as an important platform to bring together the resources, knowledge, and expertise needed to effectively address the climate change and health crises.
Our investments in research and development, together with coordinated international cooperation, will play a key role in fulfilling our climate commitments and the commitments set out at COP28.
