The Lighthouse Award is given to the medical device and pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical sectors in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region for their efforts to strengthen ethical business practices in their economies and to serve as models for other APEC economies (countries/regions). The CFP has been in place since 2014 to recognize individuals, organizations, or economies (countries/regions) that have served as a "bright and steady light" in strengthening ethical business practices, such as by serving as a model or providing active support to other APEC economies (countries/regions).

This CF was launched in 2018 to promote ethical collaboration to ensure the delivery of optimal care to patients in Japan. Domestic healthcare organizations (patient organizations, medical professional associations, pharmaceutical industry associations, medical device industry associations, and national governments) participate in the CF to share information and address issues on a regular basis while maintaining equal and loose governance, with each taking responsibility for upholding the four principles listed below. We also work with other APEC economies (countries and regions) on consensus frameworks and learning from each other's efforts.

  1. Putting Patients First
  2. Supporting ethical research and innovation
  3. Ensure neutrality and ethical N-row
  4. Promote transparency and accountability

The background of the 2023 The Lighthouse Award is that the CF was established early on and has been functioning continuously; it has a diverse membership; it maintains communication among the participating organizations; and it has the independence to address issues for which each participating organization is responsible, the extensibility to collaborate with consensus frameworks in other countries.

Chika Hirata, Chairperson of JPMA's Code Compliance Committee, accepted the award on behalf of the winners, stating the following at the award ceremony: "This is a great honor for us to receive this award.
This award is the result of the teamwork of all those who have contributed to our consensus framework and supported our sustainable growth. We hope to use this award as an opportunity for Japan's pharmaceutical industry to enhance its ability to communicate and support the Consensus Framework movement in other APEC countries."

JPMA, as a member of the participating organizations, is pleased to receive this award and will continue to contribute to the Consensus Framework to ensure the delivery of optimal care to patients in Japan.
