ABSTRACT
This paper presents the results of a survey on the use of real-world data in academic research in the pharmaceutical industry, based on academic papers in the Web of Science Core Collection. The survey focused on the use of real-world data in academic papers, which were authored by researchers belonging to the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies in terms of sales or the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in terms of sales with headquarters in Japan. In addition to the survey on medical information explicitly using the expression "real world data" in academic papers, such as electronic medical records and insurance claim data obtained at medical institutions, a survey on mobile data obtained from wearable devices and smartphones equipped with biometric sensors and a survey on molecular profile information, mainly genomic data. We present quantitative information on the characteristics of each type of data used by pharmaceutical companies, the current status of international collaboration, and related issues.
