The “Berlin Declaration” by the IFPMA
IFPMA has released the “Berlin Declaration” as a vision for achieving equitable access to vaccines and treatments during future pandemics.
Commending the 2022 German G7’s commitment to better prepare for and respond to pandemics, as well as Germany’s leadership as G7 Chair,announced the “Berlin Declaration” on July 19, 2022, as a vision for achieving equitable access to vaccines and treatments during future pandemics.
This declaration sets out an approach for the world to prepare for and respond to pandemics more equitably, drawing on the lessons learned by the pharmaceutical industry from COVID-19.It focuses on three key areas: (1) promoting innovation in preparation for pandemics; (2) strengthening manufacturing capacity to supply pandemic-related products globally; and (3) advance planning to ensure equitable access to pandemic-related products.It also proposes a framework to G7, G20, and other world leaders to further improve the provision of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics to priority populations in low-income countries.
The prerequisites for the success of this declaration are that healthcare systems in low-income countries further prepare to receive and distribute vaccines and treatments, and that high-income countries provide the necessary political and financial support. The declaration also emphasizes the need for a robust innovation ecosystem based on intellectual property rights and the removal of trade barriers to exports.
