We interviewed people on the street. We asked them about their expectations for new drugs!
We pick up on the current state of new drug development, which is constantly evolving, such as drug discovery using digital technology and the realization of a society that is easier to live in through the use of big data.
Vaccines for the new coronavirus have been available for less than a year since the beginning of the outbreak, mainly in developed countries in Europe and the United States. In addition, oral therapeutic drugs have also been put to practical use within about two years after the spread of infection.
Behind such rapid development of vaccines and drug discovery is the recent dramatic evolution of artificial intelligence (AI). AI drug discovery" not only mechanically performs the enormous amount of analysis that has been performed by humans up to now, but also supports the evaluation and analysis of the overall results, thereby accelerating the drug discovery process and leading to the rapid and efficient creation of innovative drugs. Big data is also essential for AI drug discovery. By using data from clinical trials and papers, as well as a wide variety of pharmaceutical-related big data, for machine learning, it is possible to design drugs based on comprehensive inference of drug efficacy and safety, and to propose candidate compounds using AI.

Existing drugs into treatments for new diseases
(Drug Repositioning)
Drug repositioning" is a method of discovering new efficacy of existing drugs and developing them as treatments for completely different diseases. Since the safety and manufacturing methods of existing drugs have been confirmed in humans, drug discovery can be done more quickly, at lower risk, and at lower cost than starting from the search for new drug candidates. Most successful drug repositioning has been done "by chance" in the past, but recently, more efficient drug repositioning using AI is being explored.
Find out how susceptible you are to disease and
suggest new diagnostics and treatments
Along with the development of new drugs, "big data" will also be used to make life easier for patients to receive treatment and to support future medical care. By collecting information on the health, illness, and treatment of thousands and tens of thousands of people and analyzing it using the latest computers, it is possible to determine whether a person is susceptible to disease and the changes in the body during illness. This is expected to lead to the development of new tests for early detection of diseases and new drugs that are highly effective. In the near future, AI may also be able to detect people who are susceptible to diseases and help them prevent them, and AI may be able to support patients in selecting the most appropriate medicine.
Smartphone "therapeutic apps" are now in use
and online treatment advice
In Europe and the U.S., there is an increasing number of attempts to apply mobile devices worn on the body like a wristwatch or smartphone apps to treatment. In Japan, a smoking cessation treatment app will be available in 2020. Furthermore, research is underway on apps that can be applied to treat lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and depression by encouraging lifestyle improvements. By using such apps together with drugs, patients can obtain information about their own lifestyle guidance and treatment needs. It also helps prevent patients from forgetting to take their medication. Furthermore, in times of disaster or when it is difficult to visit a distant hospital, mobile devices make it easier to obtain appropriate instructions and advice and prevent the deterioration of one's health condition.
Information on new drugs and
tips for healthy living
in an easy-to-understand manner
In order to live a strong and long life while undergoing treatment for illness, it is important for patients and their families to be well informed about illnesses and pharmaceuticals. The Pharmaceutical Cooperative will collect information for patients that each pharmaceutical company has and create a system where information on diseases and drugs can be obtained from their websites and applications. We aim to realize a society where people can live long and healthy lives by making it possible to learn information on new drugs that will become available in the near future, as well as tips for healthy living.
